Reliability of salivary cortisol levels in toddlers
نویسندگان
چکیده
The choice of cortisol sampling times in early childhood studies varies widely. Given that recommendations on protocols are largely based adults, the present study aimed to broaden current knowledge by examining how reliably measures obtained at different daytimes would reveal between-individual differences toddlers’ levels. Parents were instructed take 10 saliva samples consecutively (five per day) from their toddler (N = 19; Mage 15.8 months, SDage 4.2 months). Intra-class correlations (ICCs) computed evaluate reliability. Cortisol taken morning between 30 and 80 min after awakening bedtime most reliable differentiating children (ICCs ? .80). Wake-up within first afternoon showed moderate reliabilities .64), whereas reliability noon was poor (ICC .43). Therefore, when investigating young while being restricted a few only, assessing (at least awakening) be advisable.

Effect of Massage on Salivary Cortisol Level in Preterm Neonates
Background: Stress in preterm neonates is associated with morbidity and mortality. Preterm newborns who are in need of special care are at risk of experiencing stress because of separation from the mother, ambient noises, lighting intensity, and medical procedures. Massage is believed to reduce stress through touch stimulation, and the cortisol is one of the indicators of the stress response. T...
متن کاملSalivary cortisol levels in patients with geographic tongue and its relationship with anxiety
Background and Aim: Benign migratory glossitis, or geographic tongue, is usually an asymptomatic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology that affects the epithelium of the tongue. Among the etiologic factors proposed, emotional causes were suspected by several investigators. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anxiety and cortisol level in patients with geographic tongue compared ...
متن کاملIndividual differences in repressive-defensiveness predict basal salivary cortisol levels.
Prior studies assessing the relation between negative affective traits and cortisol have yielded inconsistent results. Two studies assessed the relation between individual differences in repressive-defensiveness and basal salivary cortisol levels. Experiment 1 assessed midafternoon salivary cortisol levels in men classified as repressors, high-anxious, or low-anxious. In Experiment 2, more rigo...
متن کاملRelationship between salivary cortisol and progesterone levels in humans.
In four studies, each with multiple hormone assessments before and after positive emotion-arousing laboratory manipulations, salivary progesterone positively correlated with salivary cortisol in men and women taking hormonal contraceptives but not in freely cycling women. This is consistent with the idea that progesterone in men is largely adrenal in origin, whereas in women its sources are bot...
متن کاملSalivary and serum cortisol levels in newborn infants.
INTRODUCTION Given that serum cortisol level interpretation in newborn infants (NBIs) is hard, the objective of this study was to correlate baseline salivary and serum cortisol levels and to describe salivary cortisol levels in the first month of life. POPULATION AND METHODS Descriptive, prospective, longitudinal, and correlational study. Term NBIs were selected from the Division of Neonatolo...
